All sails are coated with a layer of resin. Cruising boat sails have a softer feel–called “hand”–and use less resin than racing sailboat sails. This makes cruising sails easier to handle, more durable, and allows you to stuff them in a sail-bag while cruising.

Racing sails are much less durable. They come with a heavy surface coat of resin, or use one of the high tech fibers like Mylar. These stiff surface coats help sails hold their shape better in light to moderate winds. But they will break down fast if not cared for.

After cruising or racing, remove the sails from your boat. Follow these five steps to keep your sails in tip top shape:

1. Remove Leech Battens

Before you fold a mainsail, remove traditional or full length battens. Although you could fold these into the sail with care, a batten will stress the sail.

2. Find a Flat, Clean Surface

Lay the mainsail or headsail onto grass, the pier, or a clean floor space. If it’s windy, move the foot of the sail upwind. This will help control the sail as you fold it.

3. Fold the Sail like an “Accordion”

Have a partner help you. Each person should hold one corner of the foot. Reach up along the edge of the sail. Grab the edge and pull it down to the foot of the sail. Now, hold the corner of the fold, reach up and grab the edge again and pull it down over the first fold. Continue this process all the way to the head of the sail.

4. Roll the Sailboat Sail

With the mainsail, move to the edge with the tack. Roll the mainsail from the tack to the clew. With a headsail, move to the edge with the clew. Roll a headsail from the clew to the tack. Mylar or high tech sails should be stowed flat if possible. If you don’t have room and need to roll them, start at the foot and roll to the head.

5. Bag with the First Attachment On Top

Slide the sail into the sail-bag so that the first attachment point lies on top when you open the bag. In the mainsail, the clew should be at the top of the bag. On a headsail, the tack should be at the top of the bag. This makes the sailing crews job faster and easier when they bend on sails the newt time you want to go sailing.

Like GPS, when that technology first hit the market, it was slow to be taken up by recreational yachties, and was several years before it was embraced fully by the sailing community. I believe that at the time, that was partially due to the general unreliability of its predecessor, Satnav, and folks took some time to understand that GPS was not of the same stable and was much more reliable and accurate. The other main advantage of GPS over Satnav was that a vessels’ position was shown constantly as opposed to an update every six or twelve hours.

As an example of the growth of GPS, I can recall the first time I sailed in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), of the fleet of 130 yachts, only twenty or so vessels had GPS units installed, and of those, most were receivers only, just gave lat/long data and nothing else. Five years on in 1995, when I did the ARC in my own vessel, every yacht of the then 140 fleet had fully fledged GPS units installed. Since then, the proliferation of units, both hard wired and hand held has been astounding, along with the reduction of cost, which in turn has made them affordable for all boaties.

AIS systems for the sailing community are currently going through a similar acceptance period. Already, there are a greater variety of units coming onto the market and the price also is gradually decreasing, to the point where a basic AIS receiving only unit can be purchased for around $400.

You may have read about young Jessica Watson who is currently making the sailing trip of her life to be the youngest person to circumnavigate, single handed. Following her earlier contact with a merchant vessel on her shakedown cruise, she has since sailed north from Sydney, crossed the equator and now making good progress heading down to the Roaring Forties and Cape Horn. She is making excellent progress and in good shape to tackle the challenging sailing ahead.

I am sure that if she had had installed an AIS unit on her ‘Ella’s Pink Lady’ in the beginning, it would have given her a warning of the approaching vessel in sufficient time to get up on deck and take avoiding action to miss the freighter. Suffice to say that whilst in Sydney making final preparations prior to leaving port, a AIS system was installed.

To many, it would seem to be just another electronic device to clutter up your nav area and something else to go wrong and cause you trouble. However, as this technology is available, easily installed and not costly in its basic form, why not use it – after all, if it saved you just one potential collision incident at sea during your voyage, it would have been worth it.

There are already a number of brands available, starting with a ‘receive only’ unit from Comar, their AIS-Multi for $400, moving up through the Simrad range, Yacht Digital, Icom (you can check them all out on the internet) etc., to the top of the range currently, from Furuno. This is the Navnet 3D which integrates AIS capabilities into a suite of chart plotting, GPS and 3D radar. This total package price is around $8500.

Anytime the wind blows from ahead, or if it blows off the dock, you will need to control your boat so that the bow swings off the dock first. This gives you the most control in tight quarters. This technique will work on any vessel, from the smallest sailboat or power boat to the largest super tanker! Follow these five simple steps to success:

1. Rig Fenders First

Position one or two fenders at the quarter (near the stern) of the boat. Make up another fender for a “roving fender”. This fender will be used by one of your crew as he or she walks (“roves”) around the boat to drop the fender between the boat and dock to cushion any contact points.

Use a long loop of line 4′ to 5′ long. Attach a bitter end to the eye on each side of the fender. This way, the crew can hold the fender in a vertical position or horizontal position for maximum protection.

2. Make Up a Forward Quarter Spring Line

Tie one end of a long docking line to a boat cleat near the stern. Lead the line to a piling or cleat on the dock, forward of the stern cleat. Loop it around the piling or cleat and lead it back to the boat cleat at the stern. Tie off the line.

3. Bring in All Lines Except the Spring

When you are ready to leave, start your inboard or outboard engine. Assign one crew to the roving fender and another to the forward quarter spring line on the boat. Bring aboard all other lines except for the forward quarter spring line. All crew should be on the boat before you go to step 4.

4. Use Idle Speed – Reverse Propulsion

Place the engine in reverse at idle throttle speed. Keep the wheel or tiller amidships (centered). Glance over your shoulder to watch the stern and then ahead to watch the bow to make sure you clear the boats.

5. Clear the Bow and Pull the Spring Aboard

Wait until the bow clears the boat ahead by a wide margin. When clear, uncleat the spring line. Pull it aboard fast to keep it from wrapping around the propeller. Once the spring comes aboard, use your rudder and engine to maneuver out into the channel.

First, prevention is better than cure

To avoid losing your steering, you should check your steering mechanism at the start of the sailing season and then before each major voyage or race. This check is often overlooked because of its difficult-to-reach location. Look for wear, tighten fittings that have worked loose over time. Replace the wire cable if you find signs of decay.

Be prepared

Nobody should go to sea without an adequate and easily rigged emergency steering mechanism. If you’ve got a wheel, you should have a spare cable – fitted to size so as to go around the quadrant – which can be put in place in minutes. If you’ve got a tiller, you must have a fitting on top of the steering post to accept it which again can be fitted very quickly.

If you’ve lost the rudder, your problem is bigger

In many well-run ocean races it is a requirement for all entrants to have a prefabricated emergency steering mechanism. Competitors have to install their system over the stern of their yacht prior to the start so that race officials can register their compliance with the racing regulations.

While it’s not a statutory requirement for them, all cruising boats should carry a prefabricated emergency rudder – not an emergency tiller, but a replacement to use if the rudder breaks.

Racing yachts carry U-bolts and their associated nuts, with a board – usually one of the removable boards which cover water tanks or lockers in the main cabin – which can be quickly made up into a quite effective steering device. The board makes a steering ‘blade’ which is attached to a spinnaker pole or similar.

How to repair or replace the steering cable

Once the jury rig is in place there is a tendency to think, ‘OK, that’s well done, now we’ll press on,’ and no more permanent repair is attempted. Don’t neglect the basic fault.

Very often, a competent crew member with flippers, weights and goggles can go over the side and effect repairs.

More usually, with wheel steering, it is the system of wires and pulleys that fails. Whether you are cruising or racing, it doesn’t take much room to have ready, cut to the right length, and swaged, a complete replacement.

Usually when the steering has gone it is because the boat has been under some pressure and conditions were bad. Having a complete replacement gives you plenty of time to make up or repair the broken part, which can then act as the spare for the future.

How to rig the emergency rudder

The normal jury rudder consists of the spinnaker pole, two U-bolts, and a board or locker top or door which has holes drilled in it so that the parts can be assembled very quickly. In an emergency the board is attached to the pole with the two U-bolts, which bolt up tight. Then the new rudder is lashed over the pushpit using a square lashing, which will allow movement of the jury rudder.

Some cruising boats weld or otherwise attach eyes to the rudder and lead lines from them into the boat so that in the event of the steering column failing they can make tackles that will provide them with emergency steering.

Steering by trimming the sails

Now that you know what to do to fix your steering, should it fail, it’s also good to remember that it is possible to steer a yacht just using its sails. You won’t be able to sail close to the wind, probably between 70 and 140 degrees will be the best you can make. And you certainly won’t be able to tack. You should, however, be able to find somewhere that you can head for in safety.

Call for help

Some might say that you should call for help as soon as your steering fails. This would be necessary if you are at risk of going aground or hitting or being hit. If, however, you have the wherewithal aboard to fix your steering without putting anyone’s life at risk, you are displaying good seamanship by being self-reliant.

What else should you do?

The suggestions shared here don’t cover every detail of how to cope if your steering fails. To learn more, talk to your crew, assuming you have recruited some who have wide experience. Chat to other skippers at your sailing club and ask them how they have handled this situation. Consider how you could apply their answers to your particular boat.

A good skipper will imagine disasters that may affect his boat and will get as much knowledge as possible of how to deal with them.
