Motorola Xoom Review – The New Tablet In The Market
We cannot start our Motorola Xoom review, without mentioning that it’s a direct competitor of Apple’s iPad. Motorola has joined hands with Google to deliver this new Android tablet. The Motorola Xoom uses a version of the same operating system used in Google phones, the Honeycomb 3.0.The redesigned software is one of the best features of this tablet. The tablet is not only competing but may also be winning that race; it is easily the most loaded tablet out in the market today. A free hardware upgrade is also offered which will give the tablet access to the Big Red’s 4G LTE network in the future. Motorola’s attempt to future-proof the device also works as a marketing strategy to attract new customers. But the biggest drawback is the steep price tag. At almost $800, the tablet is one of the most expensive technology products.
The chassis is covered by some high quality materials like Gorilla Glass, soft-touch aluminum and sturdy plastic. On the hardware side, it is powered by a dual core processor; the 1GHz, NVIDIA Tegra 2-based slate. It also has an integrated 1GB of DDR2 RAM & 32GB of internal storage. The screen has a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 capacitive display, along with 2-megapixel front-facing camera&a 5-megapixel rear camera with 720p video recording. A red LED near the front-facing camera lights up to warn you that the camera is on. It also has the capability to play HD video and has many wireless connectivity options including the 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It also has an internal accelerometer, a barometer, a magnetometer and also a gyroscope. A microSD card slot is also built-in, but will become functional through a future firmware upgrade.
The volume keys are located on the left side while the ports are located in the center at the top edge. The ports include a 3.5mm headset jack, mini-HDMI out port, a microUSB port and the charger port. It comes with its own charger, but when using the accessories like the Standard Dock or the Speaker HD Dock, charging is possible through the microUSB port. The power button is on the back of the device; this is one button that the users will prefer having on the front for easy access.
We end our Motorola Xoom review by discussing the software. The new Android 3.0 Honeycomb runs existing applications very well. The user interface is dark & the home screen consists of five pages. The pages can be swiped left and right with your finger. The Google search button along with a voice search option is visible on the top left on all the five pages. The upper right corner has the button to view applications, add shortcuts & widgets or change the wallpaper. However navigation is only possible exclusively by using the soft buttons.
