Used Computers With Cracks and Imperfections – Can They Ever Be Trusted?
One concern often brought to the attention of a potential used computer purchaser would be the physical cracks, imperfections and overall appearance. In reality most people if you are like me,are buying or considering buying a used computer because it’s cheaper. With that we still want to bring home a quality unit. The great news is above all else nearly every online retailer is now offering the same warranties on used or refurbished desktop computers as in their new computers.
There are many other articles I can reference about the software, hardware, and accessories but this article is going to focus on the appearance regarding cracks and imperfections. Many are concerned with cracks and other cosmetic defects. Don’t be overly cautious about these aspects as it rarely matters. What is most important is that the computer is in professional working order.
What most people don’t realize is that in order to be certified to be resold that unit must undergo a battery of tests. If a part is found to be defective the part is not fixed. It is simply replaced. Computer companies cannot take a chance on a computer coming back in.
That small amount of white out on the bottom of the panel can usually be wiped off. If the bottom corner has a blemish or a chip it really shouldn’t be an issue. Perhaps someone had their company or name taped to the side. I’ve even seen models with small scratches or indentations from prior use that had no affect whatsoever on the overall use of the potential purchase.
Another piece of advice after you receive your computer in the mail is to be sure to check all the ports and USB jacks. Occasionally one or more of these is not working. Before you load all your favorite programs onto this computer and waste all afternoon check these basics. The reason being that if one or more is not working it can indicate the mother board is having issues. They can be quite a headache.
Checking the CD ROM drive for functionality is also a wise choice. This also should be followed by checking the computer screen especially for laptops. If the computer screen is purple or has a pink spot on it you can be sure your headed for trouble. Return the unit as it’s only a matter of time before you have major problems.
The reality is if you target online retailers you can be sure you get the best possible price. This offers the advantage if peace of mind with a same as new warranty in case you end up with a lemon which is rare.
