The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
The most famous adventure tour in Peru is the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
There are two options available: the four day traditional trek and the two day express version.
The last day of both is enjoyed at the site of Machu Picchu with a guided tour of the ruins and some free time to wander and explore on your own. The Peruvian government strictly controls the number of people allowed on the trail each day.
Therefore, if you are interested in doing either of these treks, it is imperative that you book a minimum of three months in advance in order obtain your permit (issued for the date of entry to the trail). It is also highly suggested you arrive in Cusco 2-4 days in advance to acclimatize to the altitude.
The four day trek is great for those looking for a moderate to difficult trek. During your first three days of hiking, you will have the chance to visit inaccessible ruins and camp under the beautiful stars of the Southern Hemisphere. On day four you will rise before the sun to make sure you reach the Sun Gate to watch the sun rise over the ruins of Machu Picchu. Your fours days of effort will also give you the chance to be among the first to explore the ruins before the official gates open.
If you are worried that the four day trail is too intense for you, you can always do a one day hike with an over night in the small town underneath Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes. You will enjoy a light hike all the way to the Sun Gate of the site of Machu Picchu. You will arrive at the Sun Gate in the mid-late afternoon and have a chance to enjoy the view. Be forewarned that you will not enter the ruins until the following day. You will be escorted by your guide into the town of Aguas Calientes to enjoy dinner and sleep in a hotel or hostel. On day two you will wake up early to enjoy the morning at the site of Machu Picchu.
