Nagios Latency Problems: Slow Responses and Checks Not Running on Time
Nagios Latency Problems/Issues: If you have a lot of hosts and services that you use Nagios to monitor, chances are, latency issues may have already crept up on you. You may be confused as to what to do about the mysterious latency. You may have tried everything possible that you can and applied all the suggested updates to your configuration files, but still, the latency issue remained. So you become frustrated.
What are you to do? With this article, I will point you in the proper direction so you can get your Nagios Application running ALL your checks on time without any latencies.
First of all, it is very important that you understand the likeliest causes of Nagios Latency issues.
There are three possible factors that can cause Latency problems with your Nagios Application:
1. Having a lot of hosts and services to monitor can surely cause sluggish run times.
2. Poorly configured settings in the Nagios.cfg file can also cause Latency issues.
3. Running an old version of Nagios can also be a culprit. Any version lower than a 3.2.3 should be upgraded.
I understand that some of you may not want to upgrade your Nagios because you’re petrified of the amount of work it may involve. However, if you’re one of these people, I urge that you get rid of that fear. If your Nagios Latency is so bad that you’re online reading this article, you will surely benefit from doing the three following things:
1. Fixing the poorly configured settings in your Nagios.cfg file
2. Turning on and off certain settings in your Nagios.cfg file
3. Upgrading your Nagios Application to the latest version Available
The specific Reason for why number three (the upgrade) is necessary is because this latest version of Nagios has in it settings that the older versions do not have. It is the availability of these new settings that will get rid of whatever Nagios Latency issues you’re having to deal with.
Before I applied the above informational advice to my environment, I was seeing latency numbers of over 400 seconds! That’s just crazy. After doing what I’m now advising you to do, my Nagios Latency issues went from 400 plus seconds, to less than 1 second!
