Extend the Life of Your Used Car
Buying a used car used to be a guessing game. What kind of shape is the car in? How was it driven in the past? Has it been in any accidents? All valid questions when buying a car. While a lot of the guess work has been taking out of purchasing car with the vehicle history reports, it’s still important to care for your car properly to extend what you’ll get out of it.
- Research your car
- Know your mechanic
- Pay attention to the warning signs
- Few people actually do this, but consider this for a second. What does you used car sound like when it starts? What does it sound like when you hammer on the gas or slam on the brakes? What about when it’s idling at an intersection? Knowing what your car sounds like will make it easier to notice any changes in sounds, which can be a big indication of an issue that you don’t notice until it’s too late.
- Do more than just give it gas
- Treat you car right!
It’s important to know the details about your car – What kind of mileage does it get? What parts commonly fail on your car? Finding forums on the internet about your car allows you to see what similarities there are between people’s stories who have owned the same model car as you, and gives you an idea of what to expect. Another great way to keep track of your vehicle is to read your owner’s manual. No one knows the car better than the manufacturers, so read their instructions and recommendations, and don’t take them lightly.
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to get to know your mechanic. If you can have a conversation with him about your car, odds are the information will be relayed much clearer than if you talk to the middleman at the service desk. This also follows a point I’ve addressed before, try to visit the same mechanic regularly. He’ll know your car almost as well as you do yourself, and it’ll give you both a better chance of catching issues more quickly.
Talk to your father or grandfather and see if he says “gas station” or “service station”. Why do older generations use “service station” instead of “gas station”? Because they used to do more than just get gas and drive off. Check your fluid levels, tire pressure, and just give your vehicle a good once over. This will keep your car running in tip-top shape.
While some people don’t think about it, caring for your used car is very important! Wash and wax it regularly, and make sure if keep it clean inside and out. These little’s things can keep your car looking and performing it’s best, and how can you not want that?
