Ubiquity for Firefox Is Great After All
Ubiquity besides its strange name is the coolest firefox plugin I ever used. Do you think I’m exaggerating? No I don’t, and I can explain why. It’s been over a year since I have plugged it into my firefox installation and it really changed the way I work completely (no wonder why I can’t use any other browser anymore). I tend to use the CTRL+Space combination which brings on the Ubiquity window more and more often for anyway I can think of. Do I need a quick translation of a block of text or just a simple word? I enter the translate command. Update my twitter status? Check my calendar or my emails?
There are commands for those things too. For a calculation I enter the calc command. To check the weather I type weather. There are lots of commands you can use quickly and easily. Just make sure you connect in your mind the command with the action. And the best part is the custom commands. You can install command sets from other people who developed them. My latest addition is the remember the milk command set created by Gary Hodgson which inserts tasks into the application into any list with just some keystrokes. You can’t imagine how useful it is.
On the other hand, using custom commands could be a risk for a novice user since its pure Javascript code which can contain malicious code. Just make sure you trust the site from where you download it. Ubiquity will alert you and show you the code to be installed every time, but its a bit useless, since not every Ubiquity user is a javascript developer to examine the code! But don’t let this let you down. Ubiquity can really make your work easier and faster!
