A Special Account Regarding the Development of the Automotive
The second big development was made by Leonty Shamshurenkov in the year of 1752 who came up with a coach carriage that had four wheels, but it ran on pedal power and was not successfully forged into a working automobile in today’s standards.
In 1769 Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot altered a horse drawn carriage into a self-propelled mechanical vehicle. Yet, this is a disputed series of events as there is evidence of some witness testimony that shows that the automobile was unable to operate successfully.
The vehicle that is considered to be the first steam-powered road vehicle was put together in 1801 and was called the Puffing Devil road locomotive. This car was based upon the workings of a train steam engine yet it could not maintain steam pressure and proved to be unsuccessful.
In 1807 Nicephore Niepce and his brother Claude created the world’s first internal combustion engine, which they called a Pyreolophore, but it was installed into a boat not a car. This problem was solved in that very year by Francois Isaac de Rivaz who designed the first car to be powered by an internal combustion engine.
Moving on almost eighty years, we see Gustave Trouve designing a motor car that ran on electricity, had three wheels and was exhibited in Paris at the International Exposition of Electricity. This was a major event as it marked the first ever low carbon vehicle that did its bit for the environment.
Even though the dogsbody work was implemented by the people mentioned earlier, who are not famously known, it was years later when Karl Benz got involved in the building of cars that the sector started making a profit.
Benz came up with the idea of a four-stroke gas engine that was built in Mannheim, Germany in 1885. His business used this as a spring board and it three years later a new model of car was on sale.
Unfortunately few cars were sold in that early period – only 25 cars were bought between 1888 and 1893. Yet, the sector was only just getting on its feet at that time and this tiny number of sales was just what the business required to be declared a success.
It was then that Benz signed on the dotted line of a licensing contract with Emile Roger, who drew up Benz automobiles in France and sold them on. It was this step that was one of the leading serious commerce deals concerning cars on the planet and helped to generate plenty of capital, as now the public in two separate countries could buy a car from a single company.
In the next period, the creation of large scale production lines became more frequent especially by Ransom Olds at his Oldsmobile factory and by Henry Ford too. Due to this, Ford could make a new car every quarter of an hour, which got the firm its name as the biggest car manufacturing firm on the face of the earth.
Many would fail to understand how this modest beginning would form the foundation for the global industry of car manufacture and sale. There is so much convenience with all of the seat belts, sat-navs, child friendly seating, leather interiors, BMW leasing deals and chrome spinning wheel covers. Yet, who knows what the future will hold for the car industry.
