It seems that everyone is unveiling new LCD models these days and Sony is no different. The Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700 is one such offering, probably fitting in the middle of Sony’s line-up with a wide variety of screen sizes ranging from 60 inches to 32 inches.

The first thing to note about the Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700 is that it uses edge LED lighting. This means that the unit actually places the LEDs around the edge of the screen rather than using a full array of LEDs behind the screen. Backlighting may well be the industry standard, at least for most products, but Sony is confident enough to head in another direction here.

There are benefits to edge LED lighting that go beyond mere innovation for the sake of it, though. For starters, the edge LED lighting makes the Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700 a far more efficient TV than most. It also packs a super-slim cabinet, which makes it easy to place just about anywhere.
Part of the potential problem for the Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700 is that a traditional backlit LED screen is said to handle black levels better due to the ability to “switch off” various parts of the lighting when needed.

The KDL-52EX700 doesn’t have any dimming technology, which means that the traditional backlighting is still in play when black levels are needed. Fortunately, the solid blacks of the picture still make for a quality foundation on which the other vibrant colours can sit. This occurs because of the TV’s slightly boosted brightness levels.

Inside, the TV uses the Bravia Engine 3 with Motionflow 120Hz technology. This reduces motion blur on the set and makes for a great picture. This, together with its crisp and full 1080p resolution, makes the Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700 a quality unit for the price.

Colour and contrast on the Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700 is nicely balanced, too. The TV doesn’t require a lot of adjustment to get the quality and balance just right, making this unit a nice set-up-and-go product right out of the gate. It’s a small package, sleek and streamlined, and makes for an excellent television for family viewing in the main room.
