The Compact and Popular Canon Powershot G11 Digital Camera
For Canon, the PowerShot G series has been its bread and butter when it comes to compact and popular digital cameras. But with markets crowding out with other offerings from the likes of Panasonic and Nikon, it hasn’t been easy to maintain ground for Canon. The Canon G11, however, has done more than ant other recent unit to solidify Canon’s dominance in the field.
The first positive that Canon fans will note about the Canon PowerShot G11 is that it bears little resemblance to the clunky products Canon has been releasing over the last few years. The Canon PowerShot G11 looks and feels, at least at the outset, an awful lot like the G10. This is hardly surprising, but the changes within the unit make for something special.
The first thing of note for the Canon G11 is that the camera incorporates a high sensitivity CCD. With this, the company has done the unthinkable and has actually reduced the pixel count from the previous model. Head-scratchers may be wondering why this was done, but the fact is that there’s no real disadvantage to having fewer pixels when you consider the whole image. Indeed, a sensor using fewer pixels can actually squeeze in more light and this can produce cleaner-looking pictures.
The Canon PowerShot G11 still packs in the four-way switch that has been popular from other models, with easy-to-use options for setting manual focus, flash, drive mode, and macro all available with the flick of a finger. There’s also a function or set button available inside the scroll wheel on the back of the unit.
The Canon PowerShot G11 features a 5x wide-angle zoom lens with an optical image stabilizer. That’s pretty standard for the field, but where the G11 really shines is with the return of the fold-out swivel display that had been missing from Canon units since the G6 from five years ago.
With a battery life of roughly 390 shots, the Canon PowerShot G11 is a terrific camera option for enthusiasts and casual users alike. It is still one of the few cameras on the market with an optical viewfinder, giving it even more value for its price range.
