Types of Grevilleas
A grevillea is an Australian plant that can be grown differently as an extensive ground cover, shrub or big trees. The leaves have attractive structures and look amazingly like small fire tree needles. The most distinct feature of this plant is its mysterious colorful flower. The flowers of a grevillea do not appear like any ordinary flower that you see in the backyard. Grevillea flowers are huddled together in huge cone-shaped group with petals that curl like a snail and elongated tinted anthers sticking out like whiskers. The colors range from pink, red, white, and orange.
There are several types of grevillea that can be grown in the garden. The most frequently planted in the yard is the grevillea noellii. It is a clean hedge plant that resembles the appearance of an evergreen juniper bush. Though the plant looks like a juniper, grevillea noellii surrounds itself with a bunch of salmon pink flowers shaped like curled elephant heads that blossom in early spring. Another type of grevillea grows as a gigantic tree. The towering grevillea robusta has a prominent bright orange cluster of flowers that blooms in the spring.
Whatever type of grevillea plant you may grow in your garden, they all have the same needs in order for them to survive. Grevilleas like a soil that is acidic and can endure long periods of drought. They are common in the Northwest desert but can also survive in other climates provided there is no solid frost. Most of them do not prefer too much water so appropriate draining is necessary. They can tolerate receiving plenty of sunlight but most of them can bear some shade as well. These plants should not be fed with phosphorus for they may be damaged by this. Mulches can also be applied to protect them from root problems.
