Which Types of Cars Draw the Most Tickets?
Whether it is a coincidence, statistical significance or meaningful correlation, recent research has proven that some types of cars draw more tickets than others. According to ISO Quality Planning, certain types of vehicles as well as certain models are more likely to draw tickets.
ISO Quality Planning is a California based company which is currently a leading source of information about property/casualty insurance risk. In 2008 a study was performed which recorded over 1.7 million drivers, and the information was used to compile a detailed list stating which cars draw the most tickets.
According to the research, drivers of Hummers (H2 and H3) are over four times more likely to obtain a traffic ticket than the average driver. “The sense of power that Hummer drivers derive from their vehicle may be directly correlated with the number of violations they incur.” said Raj Bhat, the president of ISO Quality Planning.
Although it may be a stereotype, it appears that Hummer drivers by virtue of their driving position are less likely to notice road hazards, pedestrians, road signs and are more likely to drive in an aggressive manner. Based on recent research, people who drive Hummers have a less defensive driving style than most other drivers.
The Toyota Scion tC and the xB were the second and third most ticketed vehicles (respectively), as they were both over 4 times more likely to obtain tickets than the average driver. Following the tC and xB respectively were the Mercedes Benz CLK63, Toyota Solera Coupe, and the Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG, as all were over twice as likely to draw tickets than the average driver.
Research has proven that faster vehicles, bigger vehicles, and vehicles which (in general) are more expensive tend to draw more tickets. Therefore car owners who are concerned about high insurance rates should avoid purchasing a vehicle with these predominant qualities. Insurance companies such as State Farm for example, warn Hummer owners to expect to pay significantly higher insurance rates than standard premiums for liability. In addition people who have more tickets can also expect to pay higher insurance rates with most companies.
Fortunately not all insurance companies will significantly increase insurance rates and premium for vehicles which draw more tickets or people who have multiple tickets. For example, a California based insurance agency called Dashers Insurance offers low rates of $1 a day, and advertises low rates for drivers with tickets, drivers with DUIs, drivers with SR22, and drivers considered high risk. This company actually specializes in offering high risk drivers low rates. For other states it is important to compare prices and look for insurance agencies that specifically cater to drivers with cars who draw more tickets and who cater to high risk drivers. These types of agencies may be difficult to find, however they will offer significantly lower insurance rates and premiums.
