What If Brain Control Devices Are Created – Will We Need to Consider Thought Police?
Imagine an Army Helicopter Attack Pilot who was hooked up to a Heads-Up-Display (HUD) that had eye-tracking and computer-brain interface for firing sequence. This would allow the pilot to think and shoot, reducing any reaction time and in the heat of combat would give the pilot the advantage, thus increase survival rate, and success in the battlespace. Smart thinking right – sure but what if the pilot is not in his right mind?
What if the pilot is pissed off with his wing-man, superiors, or non-combatants? Remember if he thinks, it shoots, and anything in the path is dead, ouch – talk about a collateral damage challenge. And what if WikiLeaks got a hold of that film footage? Not good. Okay so, let me change the topic, and remind you that most military tech ends up as hand-me-downs to the private sector – call it “transfer technology” and it thus, becomes dual use.
Now then, such technology has endless applications. For instance, a golfer’s cap could easily have a computer-brain interface and the golfer’s sunglasses could have a site, with range and when the golfer looks down the fairway. As the golfer swings the club adjusts, morphs, and as it strikes the ball it is going “exactly” to the correct target. But if the golfer, let’s say a man is distracted by a pretty blonde, or a bird, then the golf ball could hurt someone, or cause PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) to come calling.
What if cars in the future also have such devices, sunglasses with such features to assist with seeing through the fog, and assisting with steering, parallel parking, etc? What if the person is schizophrenic? Well, you wouldn’t want them driving a car would you? What if the person is very angry? Would the device forgo the mental commands or would the car ram someone who gave them the bird or run over a persnickety skateboarder?
Talk about collateral damage, and what happens when that skateboarder’s friends catch it all on their iPhone video streaming feature? So, I ask will we have mental competency tests for users of such technology in the future before granting licenses? Will, the “thought police” be created to deal with less-than-stable hot-heads? How is the world going to deal with this future technology? The benefits are wondrous, but the challenges are immense. So, I ask that you please consider all of this.
