Nova Scotia – Plan a Nova Scotia Vacation With the Kids
After a fun day in Nova Scotia, children love camping under the stars. The province’s parks provide comfortable campsites for little ones tired from biking, beach combing, fishing, or other Atlantic adventures. Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, situated 160 km southwest of Halifax, is a favorite with children and adults.
Kejimkujik forms part of the core zone of the UNESCO Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve. Kejimkujik is a canoeist’s paradise. The area’s first inhabitants, the Mi’kmaq, left hundreds of petroglyphs, depicting legends and events, on the slate outcrops of Kejimkujik Lake.
The 40-hectare Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park, approximately 40 minutes from Halifax, allows children to explore nature on the wild side. Besides Sable Island itself, Nova Scotia’s wildlife parks are the only places where you can see Sable Island Horses. Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park has native and exotic species – mammals and birds – including reindeer, red fox, coyote, black bear, as well as bald eagles and black swans, and many more animals. Kids and adults love Nova Scotia’s scenic walking trails.
Of course, every child enjoys an amusement park. Upper Clements Park, located just west of Annapolis Royal, is one of Atlantic Canada’s largest amusement parks. With 20 rides and live entertainment, Upper Clements Park is always a hit with the kids. The Tree Topper Roller Coaster is one of their star attractions, as well as the three-looped water slide, and Kiddie Bumper Boat corral.
Many Nova Scotia hotels have children’s programs including everything from stories and bedtime snacks (with the chef’s best cookies and milk) to games, crafts, and outdoor activities. Keltic Lodge Resort and Spa at Ingonish Beach offers ‘Keltic Kids’ – a special kids’ program. The White Point Beach Resort has a children’s playhouse as well as daily activities.
Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa has everything for Mom, Dad, and the kids. This resort organizes varied beach craft activities for children including painting shells, making garden stones at the beach, and ocean treasure crafts. Families can even relive the gold rush days and pan for gold on Cunard’s Beach at Ovens Natural Park, Riverport.
Nothing can compare to having a golden memento of a memorable Nova Scotia vacation. If kids don’t find a gold nugget, they can always find the perfect strawberry (or blueberry or raspberry) at summer U-picks. Children can fill their own baskets with berries from lush Nova Scotian fields.
The Westin Nova Scotian boasts about the most fun-filled and versatile children’s program of any Halifax hotel. With a kids’ club workout and cupcake decorating, as well as scavenger hunts and pajama parties, this hotel offers diverse children’s activities. The program is run by experienced, trained staff with knowledge of first aid, CPR, and of course, how to create fun for kids.
Vacation by the sea and stay in exceptional Nova Scotia cottages and hotels. Guests can choose from oceanfront properties and luxurious beach houses as well as elegant vacation homes and charming cottages. Select a family cottage near Nova Scotia’s best known (or lesser known) beaches.
