Holland – or the Netherlands, as it is officially known – can be found in Western Europe, bordering the North Sea, Belgium and Germany. Its waters also border the United Kingdom as well as Denmark and Norway.

1. Amsterdam

2. Windmills

There are 19 World Heritage windmills of Kinderdijk, which are considered the country’s best. They are either round or octagonal and some are open to visitors.

3. Cheese

Located in the north of Amsterdam, the city of Alkmaar is famous for having preserved the 17th century of pattern of canals. However, it has has its place on our list for its fabulous cheese market – held on Friday mornings in the summer and opening at the crack of dawn. The selling process involves hand-clapping, while purchases are occasionally carried off by porters on ornamental carriers. The market closes at midday, but don’t let your visit end there. A walk through the old town is a must, with many of the houses hundreds of years old.

4. Museums

The Dutch art movement began in Amsterdam, which is the home of some truly inspiring museums and collections. The Rijksmuseum is one the locals are especially proud of, as it has the largest collection of art in the country. However, if your tastes lie specifically with the works of Van Gogh and Rembrandt, then they each have a dedicated museum that are well-worth a visit. Modern art fans, meanwhile, are better off taking in the collection at the highly recommended Stedelijk Museum.

5. Eindhoven

If you prefer the modern aspects of life, then why not visit Eindhoven – a symbol of design and technology in Holland, with the famous Phillips factory, but also a nightlife hotspot thanks to a host of top-notch bars and restaurants. However, it still has enough cultural attractions, including the Van Abbermuseum – a stunning structure designed by Abel Cahen that offers a variety of interesting modern art exhibitions.
