As the weather gets warmer, people’s thoughts usually turn toward spending more time outside enjoying the arrival of summer. There are many types of activities from which to choose. Several involve spending little or no money at all.

One favorite that never loses appeal is going on an old-fashioned picnic. Picnicking does not have to be elaborate. Just pack a basket full of your favorite sandwiches, a thermos of juice and a few pieces of fresh fruit and that is all there is to it. Head to a favorite park and spend a lazy afternoon enjoying the sights. Try a nature walk or a hike for a more active afternoon.

Camping is another favorite outdoor activity for the young and old, alike. It can be especially economical if you borrow a tent from a friend or family member. With the popularity of camping today, there are campsites available in most areas. Making a campfire at night adds to the fun of spending a night out-of-doors (but be aware not all campsites permit it), as it adds a special warmth and smell to the experience.

When assembling a large group for an afternoon of outside enjoyment, consider doing a treasure hunt. Although this takes a little preparation, the results are well worth the time. They are loads of fun for adults as well as children. Add some competitive activities to the mix of the day and give out prizes to the best teams, for an added touch.

Gardening is another way many people enjoy spending their time outdoors. A great hobby, it has many rewards. Nothing is more satisfying after a day of working in a garden than seeing beautiful flowers or vegetables growing. Often there are gardening shows and competitions to attend, which are other venues for outdoor fun for the gardening enthusiast.

You don’t always need to leave home to enjoy the outdoors. Why not opt for an afternoon in your own garden leisurely barbecuing while relaxing on some outdoor bean bags? Alternatively, try sunbathing or reading a favorite book. No matter the preference on the type of activity, when warmer weather arrives, everyone likes to be outside to enjoy it in his or her own way.
