It would be hard to debate that human beings are very interesting species, and it has been said that all life is interesting. Mankind seems to have made his societies and civilizations quite complex, and much different than other species on the planet. Just the extent to which humans use tools to accomplish their tasks, entertain themselves, yes, and kill their fellow man is more than amazing – in fact, sometimes downright scary, literally.

In this series we’ve talked about so many things, and we’ve come full circle on all aspects of human behavior and yet, today I’d like to talk about what makes Mankind different, or some might say better than the other species. There is no doubt there are a tremendous number of differences, and that human beings live at the top of the food chain currently.

And, in evolutionary terms it probably hasn’t been that long compared to let’s say the dinosaurs. Nevertheless, here we are at the top of the game, and we ought to be proud of ourselves. Now then, let’s go ahead and take a few calls – and see what’s on your mind today. Let’s go ahead and take the sixth caller today.

“Hi there Linda from Springfield, what is your question today?”

“I’d really like to know what makes humans so unique, what makes humans different from other animals, and I don’t want the biblical answer, because I think all animals have personality, empathy, the ability to reason, and you mentioned tools, there are many types of animals that make tools, as anyone can see who watches Mutual of Omaha’s “Wild Kingdom” or Animals on the Discovery Channel on TV, that’s my son’s favorite show, he is five and he already knows.”

Indeed Linda you make all good points, and on the surface it would appear that there are not a lot of differences between various mammals and different types of species on this planet. Each one seems to have characteristics which surprise us, and each one is somewhat unique, and they would have to be to have survived this long in their niche in the food chain. And to survive out in the wild, well that’s just not as easy as it looks. For instance, ants build great civilizations, and honey bees are great engineers. Chimpanzees, Dolphins, and many other species are quite intelligent.

And as you mentioned most animals have personality, we know this from our cats and dogs, and perhaps, even our fish in the fish tank seem to have some personality which is individual to them. In fact, I have a fish tank right front of me. Oscar the fish, which I named him, or her, I hope it is a him is staring at me, I wonder if he knows what I’m saying? Just kidding, but you get the point.

Maybe what makes us unique is the ability to ask that very question you just asked? Maybe what makes us unique is the ability to ask these questions and ponder these concepts and thoughts? Maybe what makes humans unique is we are one of the species where our brain is what makes up us, and our bodies are merely here to serve it.

Whereas, with other species the brain is used to propel the body, act on impulses, and perpetuate survival. The reality is I don’t know, and I haven’t found anything that I know for sure is unique to only humans. But if I were a guessing man, I think I’d look along those lines. But what do you think?
