Battery life is undoubtedly the most important value of a mini notebook, after its price of course. If you’re a new notebook or netbook owner, you might want to know about the tricks and tips that keep its battery in the original condition. If you’ve seen a computer with a 40 min battery you’ve seen one that has not been taken care of properly.

1. Use the battery. Don’t just let it lay around even if you spend most of your time on AC power. Deterioration happens when it’s unused for a long period of time. Pull the plug every now and then, I suggest at least twice a week.

2. Store the battery. If you don’t plan on ever using the accumulator for a long time, charge it to 60%, put it in a sealed plastic bag and into the fridge.

3. Avoid heat. During operation processors, graphic cards and all chips scattered around the motherboard emit heat which greatly reduce the life expectancy of a Lithium-Ion cell. To avoid excessive amounts of it, rise the back end of the netbook an inch using a book or a special notebook cooler. Don’t cover the lids during operation with your legs or by putting the whole thing on a soft surface.

4. Use AC power when you do some processor intensive task. By doing that you ensure it doesn’t draw the internal power source at maximum rate which helps fight heat indirectly. Some notebooks may work more slowly when they’re plugged in, refer to the manual.

5. Check date of production. If you have a chance to check when the small laptop was made, you can take an educated guess if it’s been laying there in the store for months, or is a new shipment. I’ve seen multiple power sources break while not used. To avoid this you should put it into work immediately as soon as you unbox the unit, and buy one that’s not been standing in the store for a long time.

6. There is an value called cut-off voltage. It means that there is a certain voltage value where the integrated electronics cut the charging. The higher it is the fewer cycles will the battery work for. You can’t change it for yourself at home, but you can take the computer off the charger at 90% to imitate such a lower cut-off. It won’t matter much now that netbooks and notebooks get outdated way before their charge cycle limit is reached, but every little helps.
