STANDARD or accepted English is also called King’s English. This is because Standard English evolved from English spoken by the British monarchy.

King’s English is

* English speech or usage that is considered standard or accepted; Received Standard English.

* The standard, pure or correct English speech or usage, also called Queen’s English.

* Standard, educated, or correct English speech or usage, esp. of England.

With this in mind, today’s Standard English should be called Queen’s English, instead. As you can see, it has been defined in one of the dictionaries that it is also considered as the Queen’s English. The reason: the current monarch of the British Commonwealth is not a king but a queen. To be precise, she is Queen Elizabeth II.

Her full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, but she is officially called Elizabeth II. She was born in London, England, on April 21, 1926. Being a child and successor of King George VI, she had the privilege of taking and finishing her education at home in Buckingham palace, London, and at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

She married Prince Phillip on November 20, 1947. When her father died on February 6, 1952, she became the queen of the British monarchy. But it was only on June 2, 1953 that her coronation as queen was held at Westminster Abbey, London.

By travelling extensively and allowing the media to take a close look at her family’s domestic life, she brought the monarchy closer to the British people. And even though she is formal and unemotional in public, she is an extremely popular queen, being greatly admired and respected.

Today, although real power in Britain no longer rests on the monarchy, she continues to take a serious and informed interest in government business, aside from her traditional and ceremonial duties. She, in fact, has weekly audiences with the prime minister and other cabinet ministers of the British government.

But even though she no longer has much political power, she continues to wield enormous economic power. She is one of the world’s richest women owing to her financial and property holdings.
