Beekeepers Delight
Beekeepers worldwide are losing their beautiful hives full of honey and bees to the African small hive beetle. An Australian Apiarist has invented a simple, low cost everlasting beetle trap that will keep both bees and beekeepers happy!
While Australia is world’s only land-mass without the Varroa-mite, we do have the African small hive beetle. When they find a hive, they soon turn it into a stinking black slimy ruin. At least a $300 loss. Awful. And the little blighters then turn out pupae which drop into the earth, turn into beetles and fly to the next hive and start again.
Luckily, an Ozzie beekeeper has invented a remedy – a handspan long beetle trap about the thickness of your thumb which is half filled with natural oil then snapped closed with a ladder like top that only beetles are small enough to scuttle through and drown. All the Apiarist has to do is drain the oil for refilling (which now smells of beetles and attracts more of ‘em) knock out the dead beetles (otherwise the last live ones will crawl out over the dead beetles to get out!) and replace the trap between the timbers in the landing area or between the racks of honey at the top of the hive.
Simple, effective, cheap to buy and they’ll outlast the beetles!
As a footnote, once the honeybee becomes extinct, the human race has 3 years to live! On that sobering thought,
