Backing Up Files While You’re on the Move
Thanks to a recent round of holidays at Armor-IT we’ve been putting a little more thought than usual into backing up pictures and documents on the fly.
When you travel, if you travel like we do, you don’t have a lot of hardware with you and may very well be stuck using a public computer just to check email if you opted not to lug a netbook or notebook with you.
If you did bring a portable computer with you backing up is really not a problem. Copy pictures from your camera onto the device, leaving the originals on your camera. Then copy any documents you’ve worked on to the cameras memory card so everything is duplicated. This provides you with a rudimentary backup. As long as both camera and computer aren’t damaged, lost or stolen you will have your files.
The next step will depend on your level of technology, expense and time you’re willing to invest during your travels. Most of us own USB flash memory, even though they are less reliable as a whole than external harddrives they are very inexpensive and make a good tertiary backup (third copy).
You can also do what we do here which is, use Go2MyPC to connect your travel computer or public computer to you home/office PC. We then use the public computers to do two things. First we make a quick copy of the new pictures to our flash drives, then we use Go2MyPC’s file transfer function to make a copy to our personal workstations at the office. The reason this is so important is if we were to get mugged, loose our equipment or have the equipment damaged in an accident. All files and pictures would be preserved back home at the office.
Technology is easy to replace, pictures of our kids first visit to a zoo or the brilliant marketing plan you came up with while staring out over the sandy beach are a lot harder to replace.
Keep an eye out for our next blog where we’ll go into home servers and NAS boxes as backup to give you some pointers on how to set up a good home backup system.
In the mean time if you need a flash drive, external hard drive or a netbook for your travels feel free to hit our hardware affiliates listings to help yourself find the toys and tools you need.
