Although prions is defined as unprecedented infectious pathogens, but it now have been found to keep the nerves healthy. The prion proteins are responsible for many neurodegenerative disorders in people and maybe genetic, sporadic or infectious in origin. The experiments, which are still under research being carried on mice, were done to know how these prions are related and responsible for the brain disease vCJD, or Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

The sheath that surrounds the nerves in our body is thought of being maintained in form and utility by these prions, which the Swiss scientists have said is somehow evident. Also, it has been reported that the absence of these may be related to some of the disorders that are caused in the PNS.

Also, some suggest that prions quite different from what they were being thought till day have some vital roles in the body and are also indicating that they may prevent humans from the Alzheimer’s disease and may also be playing some roles in the sense of smell in human beings.

The diseases are now correlated to be caused by not actual prions but there mis-folded or malfunctioning versions. Still an answer overshadowed by doubts and actual evinces, saying as to what roles and functions the protein plays in its healthy, normal form is still not clearly dictated.

The studies, which are being performed on mice the scientist are trying to notice both the effects of the presence and absence of the prion proteins on the functioning of the nervous system in mice. While the removal from Schwann cells showed no alterations but surely when removed from the neurons or the nerve cells, degeneration and breakdown of the myelin sheath was noticed.

An unlikely complete answer to a questing that, “Are the prions actually helpful and good for the body’s nervous system and other parts” or “is it still that disease causing pathogen”… to actually get known will have to wait more till these on paper things actually get success in practicality too.
